September 21, 2025: “Gluttony or Moderation?”

Sep 14, 2025 | 0 comments

Proverb: If you find honey, eat just enough—too much of it, and you will vomit.  (25: 16)

Jesus himself was called a “glutton” and “drunkard” by association with others, even if he didn’t eat and drink to excess. Gluttony seems more harmful to the sinner than anyone else, especially because it’s usually understood as a lack of self-control or discipline. But gluttony is about an overall preoccupation with matters of the flesh – food, drugs, alcohol.  “A glutton is one who raids the icebox for a cure for spiritual malnutrition.”  Gluttony takes the balance out of life and distracts us from work, relationships, and our spiritual life.  How do we live a life of discipline that honors God’s creation (our own bodies)?

Pastor Mary’s message is based on Philippians 3: 17-21 and I Corinthians 6: 19-20.
